Furman Symphony Orchestra and Oratorio Chorus Perform Friday, Apr. 26

The Furman Symphony Orchestra (FSO) and Oratorio Chorus will present a concert Friday, April 26 at 8:00 pm in McAlister Auditorium.

The spring Oratorio, “Fauré Requiem, and Bizet L’Arlésienne Suites,” is a Sound Quality Concert Series event presented by the Furman Department of Music. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors 60 and older, and $5 for students.

While FSO conductor Thomas Joiner is on sabbatical, Furman Music Professor Hugh Ferguson Floyd will conduct the FSO, the Furman Oratorio Chorus, which includes members of the Furman Singers and the Furman Belle Voci, and featured student soloists in a season-closing concert with inspired music from France.

Assisting Floyd is senior piano performance major Charles Baldwin of Decorah, Iowa. Furman Music Professor Vivian Hamilton prepares the vocalists.

The evening includes selections from the charming and popular L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 and Suite No. 2 by Georges Bizet. Written as incidental music for a play, these tuneful suites are evocative of Southern France. The program concludes with Gabriel Fauré’s ethereal Requiem, a gentle work of exquisite beauty that expresses comfort and peace for all.

Soloists for the performance include junior Kirby Burgess, soprano, from Marietta, Georgia, and freshmen John Potvin, baritone, from Aiken, and Ben Connelly, baritone, from Lexington.

Tickets may be purchased at the door or ordered through Eventbrite. For more information, contact the Furman Music Office at 864-294-2086, and [email protected].
