PRE-SEASON TRAINING SCHEDULE . FIGURE SKATING . SKATING LESSONS . HOCKEY

Asheville Ice Skating Association

Due to overwhelming interest, the Asheville Ice Skating Association (AISA), formerly Angels on Ice, has expanded its program offerings to include hockey, speed skating, and group and private lessons for adults and seniors.

AISA got its start last year, with Angels on Ice, Asheville's first figure skating club. Approximately 45 boys and girls, ages 3 to 17, participated in the program. Highlights of the club's first season included a complete production of The Wizard Of Oz on ice (the skaters even got to meet and skate with Kenneth Feld's professional Wizard cast), a "Men In Black" exhibition show performed at an Asheville Smoke game, and a Spring Break Ice Skating Camp at the Civic Center.

The 1998/99 season also marked the first time Asheville was represented at a figure skating competition. Five skaters from Angels on Ice went to Greenville's 7th Annual "Break The Ice" Competition on May 15, competing against some of the best youth skaters in the Southeast. Angels on Ice returned home with 3 Gold Medals and 2 Silver Medals.

The 1999/2000 season will be a busy one for AISA program directors Serenity and Johnathon Allen. In addition to Angels on Ice, they will also offer speed skating, private and group lessons for adults and seniors, a "Special Skater Program" for chidren and adults with disabilities, Home School Skates, and special programs for Girl Scout and Boy Scout groups, day care centers, church groups, and, possibly, UNCA students.

Of all the new programs slated for AISA's coming season, hockey may be the most eagerly anticipated. In November, AISA, in cooperation with the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club and the Tarwheels Adult Roller Hockey League, will launch two recreational hockey leagues, one for juniors and one for adults. "I can't wait!" says local hockey fan John Dixon, who grew up playing hockey in Western Massachusetts. "It's going to be a blast!"
