In November, the Upcountry History Museum will open our new exhibit, Weaving Our Survival: Upcountry Stories of World War II. On Friday, November 6th, those in attendance at UHM's Hollywood Canteen will be the first to view the exhibit before it opens to the public immediately following UHM's Third Annual Veterans Weekend ceremony at 10AM on Saturday, November 7th. The exhibit features the Upcountry's contributions to the war effort and details the impact of the War on the evolution of the Upcountry. Visitors will be able to view oral histories with members of the WWII generation regarding homefront activities, the textile industry, and experiences in the European and Pacific Theaters of war and beyond. Photographs of the Upcountry from the War era reveal a community committed to supporting our Allies and troops overseas. This highly interactive exhibit has components that will appeal to all age levels. Upcountry South Carolina is bordered on the north by North Carolina, including the Piedmont section of the Appalachian Mountain chain; on the west by Georgia, and it extends to the central plains of South Carolina. Its fifteen counties include: Oconee, Pickens, Greenville, Spartanburg, Cherokee, York, Anderson, Laurens, Union, Chester, Abbeville, McCormick, Greenwood, Edgefield and Newberry. Its identity as “Upcountry” distinguishes the region from South Carolina’s “Low Country,” as does its rich heritage and culture, which began as an Indian frontier and continues today as a political and economic hub identified as the “Upstate.” (Image provided by www.upcountryhistory.org.)
