Earthquake Awareness Day at the South Carolina State Museum Saturday

Visitors to the South Carolina State Museum Saturday, Nov. 7 will be able to discover the forces that cause earthquakes and have fun doing it.

The State Museum will partner with the College of Charleston to present Earthquake Awareness Day, a day of activities, earthquake history and education at the museum from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Scientists and educators from the College of Charleston’s Department of Geology will present activities which will enable museum guests to:

Design a building and test it for stability;
Race against a seismic wave;
Register their own little earthquakes on a seismometer;
Participate in a fault line activity;
Hear mythological stories about earthquakes;
Participate in earthquake drills; and
Color in earthquake-related coloring books for kids.

“These are really fun activities that will get kids jumping and running,” said Director of Science and Outreach Tom Falvey. “Museum guests will explore the forces that cause earthquakes and learn about how we prepare for this natural disaster. Adults might even have a little fun, too.”
