Public Invited to Try Transit in October; Fare Free Friday on Oct. 28th

Mayor Knox White has proclaimed October as “Try Transit Month” in the city of Greenville and Greenlink has a full schedule of events designed to raise awareness of the economic and environmental benefits of public transit.

Events are designed to appeal to a wide cross-section of citizens and range from children’s story time to a community presentation by a nationally known transit expert to a workshop designed to teach employers how to promote local transportation options to their employees.

The highlight of the month-long celebration is Greenlink’s popular Fare Free Friday event, sponsored by MetroPCS. This year’s event is scheduled for October 28 and on this special day, passengers will enjoy free rides and transfers on all of Greenlink’s 11 fixed routes. Routes 1-14 operate from 5:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Route 16 operates from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Schedules and estimated time stops for all routes are available at www.ridegreenlink.com.

According to MetroPCS SC Marketing Specialist Tiffany Davis, MetroPCS is proud to partner with Greenlink to offer the fare-free day as a way to introduce public transit to those who may not have considered it as a transportation option and to thank existing Greenlink riders for helping to relieve congestion on Greenville roadways. “Transportation is often cited as a barrier to many quality of life parameters: job stability, education, access to healthcare, etc.,” said Davis. “MetroPCS hopes that Fare Free Friday will be an example of how public-private partnerships can help alleviate these obstacles in our community.”

Greenlink’s overall vision includes providing safe, reliable, convenient service, as well as playing an active role in the community’s transportation system. To that end, says Nicole McAden, Greenlink’s Marketing and Program Specialist, one of Greenlink’s goals is to increase community support through successful phased service implementation. “Try Transit Month is a great opportunity for us to share our passion for public transportation, show potential customers the many benefits that transit can provide and demonstrate our commitment to improving the quality of life in our community,” said McAden. “We’re excited about the great line-up of events and we look forward to celebrating this special month with the citizens of Greenville.”
