Introduce Kids to Hiking

We all know children who spend too much time indoors and not enough outside playing, let alone exploring nature. To help combat children’s inactivity and lack of knowledge and comfort with the natural world, PCF, with sponsorship from Palmetto Health, has launched a new program to teach kids through a combination of classroom lessons and outdoor recreation instruction. This spring, fifth graders at Brennen and Horrell Hill Elementary Schools will become the first “Junior Trailblazers” in South Carolina. After classes on SC wildlife, trees, first aid, and outdoor skills, the program will culminate with a day hike on a passage of the Palmetto Trail. For more information, contact Kari Fox at (803) 771-0870 or email kfox@palmettoconservation.org.

Once it is completed, South Carolina's Palmetto Trail will run more than 425 miles from Mountains to the Sea. This ongoing project began in 1997 and new passages are opening with each season. As one of only 13 cross-state trails in the United States, it is a federally designated Millennium Legacy Trail. The trail will serve as the spine for a statewide network of paths open to walkers, bicyclists and, in some places, equestrians. By helping to make communities more walkable, the Palmetto Trail provides important health and environmental benefits. It also provides access and promotes connectivity to historic sites and important natural areas.

Since 1989, the Palmetto Conservation Foundation, its members and supporters have brought a research-based, non-adversarial approach to conservation, preservation, and recreation issues in South Carolina. Operating as a statewide nonprofit organization with offices in Columbia and Spartanburg, PCF seeks to build widespread consensus on the most appropriate ways for South Carolina's communities to grow and prosper while maintaining local character and quality of life.
