Crestview Places First at State Championship for Odyssey of the Mind

Two teams from Crestview Elementary overcame stiff competition in Columbia recently. The “Dinostories” team took top honors, placing first in their division. This team will now compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in College Park, Maryland May 31 through June 3. Team members include Taylor Carroll, Joshua Carson, Evan Kramer, Charles Ludlow, Christopher Ludlow, Ben Teal and coaches, Sandi Carson and Mary Ludlow.

The Dinostories Odyssey of the Mind problem was to create and present a humorous extinction theory for the dinosaurs. The production had to include two technical elements- a technical simulation of the extinction event and a technical change in scenery. The team chose for their “Southern” dinosaurs to be “choked out” by an accelerated overgrowth of kudzu caused by the fertilizer, sweet tea.

“The Wonderful Muses” team placed third in their division. Their problem was to create and present an original performance that included one of the nine Greek muses from mythology. The Muse had to inspire two people in the performance- an historical figure and a team created person. The team chose to inspire Galileo.

Team members include Greg Balardini, Mackenzie Cain, Arianna Lopez, Caleb Mayfield, Amy Young and coaches, Natasha Baird and Dani Turner.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems ranging from building mechanical devices to representing their own interpretation of literary classics. This will be Crestview Elementary’s third trip to the World Finals. Last year a team from Crestview received an honorable mention, placing sixth out of 62 teams from around the world.

The team is raising funds to help pay for this trip and needs the help of the community. To donate funds for the trip, contact the school at 355-2600.
