Milliken & Company will host the annual 5K Earth Run and Corporate Shield event on Saturday, March 29, at the Roger Milliken Center Arboretum in Spartanburg. The international manufacturer, which recycles more than 99 percent of its solid waste worldwide, encourages environmental stewardship through the event, while runners experience the rare all-grass course and environmentally friendly trophies.
“People rarely have the opportunity to run on grass and enjoy feeling like a kid again,” said Mike Baird, race director. “Most races courses are on hard surface asphalt.” Baird, the director of Milliken’s recycling initiatives, notes that coaches describe the course that loops through the corporate grounds—a nationally recognized arboretum—as one of the finest in the Southeast. It is used for numerous high school and collegiate competitive events. “We are close to 500 pre-registered for this event,” added Baird. For trophies, winners of the 2008 Earth Run will be presented with re-useable tote bags that can be used for things like grocery shopping instead of wasting paper or plastic bags. Past trophies have included trees, river rocks, sand sculptures, candles, and cross-sections of a fallen cedar tree. All registrants will receive a Cheers SmartTowel by Milliken. Milliken & Company has more than a century of environmental stewardship. The company is respected for its leadership and dedication to sustainable excellence at the international, national, state and local levels. “Incredibly, Milliken landfills less than 1% of its waste and demonstrates sustainable practices through a focus on recycling and elimination of wasteful processes,” said Richard Dillard, Milliken’s director of public affairs. “It is this type of corporate philosophy that has contributed to Milliken being named one of FORTUNE magazine’s ‘100 Best Companies to Work For,’” added Dillard. Following the race will be door prize drawings for a variety of Area Rugs and other Milliken products. Earth Run is one of a series of Corporate Shield area events in which scoring is based on team participation with an emphasis on fitness and friendly competition. The event starts at 9:00 am, with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. near the Helipad. There will be a colorful photo-op near the large American flag as the runners loop by the fountains and duck ponds.
