Hurricane Victims Need Your Help; Take A Moment to Make a Contribution


The Upstate is opening its heart and wallet to assist victims of Hurricanes Wilma, Rita, and Katrina. Local charities are also organizing relief efforts and accepting donations to send to the Gulf, and the opportunities to contribute are endless:

  • Area American Red Cross Chapters have already sent volunteers and emergency vehicles to the Gulf, and are continuing to mobilize additional resources to join the organization�s largest-ever relief effort. Volunteers and monetary donations are needed; Red Cross members will use the donations to buy items for victims. For more information, contact local Red Cross offices:

    The Red Cross has also issued an urgent call for O blood-type donations. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, call 1-800-GIVELIFE.

    The American Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross have established the Family Links Registry to enable people to re-establish contact with family and friends. To access the registry, visit www.redcross.org or call 1-877-LOVED-IS or 1-877-568-3317.

    Several local businesses and organizations are collecting for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund:

    • BI-LO/Bruno�s supermarkets is also partnering with the American Red Cross to help relief efforts. To encourage giving, BI-LO has announced a $25,000 match in funds donated. Shoppers can request to scan a special Red Cross card at the check out to donate $1 or more to the relief effort. 100% of the funds collected will be donated to the American Red Cross and BI-LO/Bruno�s will match the donations up to $25,000.
    • Blu Martini, Greenville is a Red Cross drop-off point. Call 864.242.5743 for more information.
    • Christ Church Episcopal is a Red Cross drop-off point. Call the church to be sure that someone is on hand to accept your contribution at 864-271-8773.
    • Todd, Inc. Hair Studio is encouraging other area spas and salons to join them in donating to the American Red Cross.

    Area colleges and universities are also providing aid:
    • Furman University has established a Katrina Disaster Relief Fund to which the Furman community (alumni, parents, friends, faculty, staff and students) can contribute. All of the donations will be sent Donations may be sent to:

      Plans are also in the works for a collection effort at the Paladins' home opener on Sept. 17. Football fans can donate backpacks, pencils, paper, lunch boxes and other school supplies. Furman students may drop off supplies at the campus-wide Activities Fair on Sept. 20. Students will also be able to swipe their meal card and donate the price of one dining hall meal to the relief efforts. Those interested in donating time or money to the relief efforts should contact Furman's Chaplains Office at 864-294-2133 or [email protected].
    • Clemson University has designated the American Red Cross as recipient of all campus fundraising efforts for hurricane vicitm assistance, and Red Cross and campus volunteers will collect donations at every home footall game.

  • Barley's Taproom is a hurricane relief drop-off point during business hours. All proceeds from Voodoo Pasta and Abita Purple Haze go to hurricane relief. Call 864-232-3706 for more information.

  • Central Carolina Bank in Anderson is collecting monetary donations.

  • Fatz Cafe will match every dollar in guest and associate donations up to $25,000 to the Salvation Army�s Hurricane Katrina disaster relief fund. Currently, Fatz Cafe restaurant guests are encouraged to add $1 to their dining bill, but they are able to make a monetary donation of their choice. In addition, Fatz Cafe associates can voluntarily deduct a portion of their paychecks to aid the relief effort.

  • His Radio 89.3FM is working with YMCA in South and North Carolina to collect pre-paid gas gift cards, phone cards, and credit cards to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Cards can be dropped of at YMCAs in both states.

  • Norman's Barbershop on W. Antrim Drive is offering free haircuts to hurricane victims, 864-242-3454.

  • For information on the welfare of animal victims of the storm, contact Anderson-based Pets In Peril at 864-222-1619. They are supplying doctors, medical teams, and supplies. Donations to relief efforts can be mailed to the organization at 1115 Dunlap Road, Anderson, SC 29621.

  • The Salvation Army has deployed volunteers and resources to the Gulf, and is accepting donations by mail at P.O. Box 1237, Greenville, SC 29602.

  • Veterans of Foreign Wars is collecting monetary donations for veterans and their families affected by the hurricane. For more information, visit the VFW website.

  • Victoria's Place Spa and Salon at 118 Victoria Street, Greer, is collecting items to send to Mississippi. Contact Debbie Fore for more information at 864-801-4300.

  • Wal-Mart and Sam's Club in Anderson are filling tractor trailers with supplies. Collections will continue until all trucks are filled. Phillips Recoveries, Martin and Martin Auctioneers, The South Greenville Fire Department, and State Fire Marshall have volunteered to drive the trucks down to Louisiana.

  • West Lee Shoe Repair Shop at the corner of W. Lee and Wade Hampton Blvd. is collecting gently used shoes to fix up and give to hurricane victims. 864-292-8399.

  • Toiletries and bottled water can be dropped off at the following locations:

    • Cedar Grove Baptist Chruch, 206 Moore Street, Simpsonville
    • Martin-Webb Baptist Learning Center, 107 Fleming Street, Greenville
    • New Foundation Baptist Church, Lenhardt Road, Easley
    • Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 120 Shady Grove Church Road, Pelzer
    • Seneca River Family Life Institute, 298 S. Poplar St., Seneca
