The Health Information Management program at Greenville Tech will be available online for Fall 2008. Growth in the field, the implementation of electronic records, and increasing regulatory requirements continue to drive the need for trained professionals in the Health Information Management field. The online format allows people with busy schedules to gain the required skills, and allows those currently working in the field an opportunity to obtain their degree.
Phase One of the associate degree program includes all general education courses and may be completed at Greenville Tech or any articulating college. Phase Two includes the Health Information coursework, all of which will now be available online. Courses include Coding and Classification Systems, Medical Pathology, Medical Records and the Law, Registries and Statistics, and Supervisory Principles. Clinical assignments are also part of the learning process during Phase Two, giving students hands-on practice in the field. Health Information management professionals manage the patient information and data needed to delivery patient care and treatment. Skills typically include data abstraction, coding, monitoring and reporting activities, data base management, as well as maintaining data confidentiality and security. Greenville Tech’s program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM) allowing graduates of the program to test for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) credential. Employment opportunities include acute care facilities, ambulatory health care facilities, industrial clinics, state and federal health agencies, long-term care facilities, insurance companies, and law practices.
