Greenville Greek Festival Returns This Weekend

Greenville becomes “Greekville” as the magic of Greece comes to town this weekend. This “Glendi,” or party, will feature authentic Greek food served in the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral Hellenic Center during lunch and dinner.

Take-out orders for food and pastries will also be available throughout the weekend. Drive-thru lanes on Elford Street will also be available for take-out meals Thursday and Friday; and FAX orders will be accepted for lunch on Friday.

Outside food booths will offer Greek favorites –– gyros, souvlaki, triopites, Greek fries, Greek sausage, saganaki, Greek burgers, calamari and much more.

The amphitheater will offer live Greek music and traditional folk dancing throughout the weekend. Dancers dressed in traditional costumes of the various regions and islands of Greece will perform authentic dances. Mouth-watering native Greek food will be abundant.

The Greek Coffee Shoppe (Kafenion) outside will offer exotic Greek coffee and indescribable “loukoumades.” And there will also be Greek wine, American coffee.

In addition to the food, we will explore the rich culture that only Greece has to offer. Ongoing tours of our beautiful Greek Orthodox Cathedral will explore the mystical symbolism and history of the Eastern Orthodox faith. Discover this Apostolic Christian religion that dates back to 33 AD. See our beautiful mosaics and icons to learn the roles they play in the Church.

There will a series of Lectures on Greek history on Saturday at 6 & 7 pm.

Spend the afternoon strolling through the “plaka” of various vendors. You’ll find Greek imports, sponges, worry beads, jewelry, T-shirts, Grecian coin skirts and much more, much more. Shop to your hearts delight.

Be sure to pick up some of those sponges and Greek soaps –– they are great souvenir items.
