Greenlink will expand its service to Furman University beginning Mon., Oct. 5th, with an additional stop near the Herring Center for Continuing Education on the Furman campus.
The stop was added at the request of participants of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), according to Greenlink and Furman officials.
The new stop is on Greenlink Rt. 3, which includes service to Furman with an hourly stop just outside the university’s front gate. That stop will remain, but beginning Oct. 5 the bus will enter the front gate, travel the Mall Road, turn right onto Cherrydale Drive, then left onto Timmons Drive. After a stop at the Herring Center, the bus will exit the campus through the back gate, turn left onto Duncan Chapel Road and continue to its stop at Publix University Square.
“We received several requests from OLLI participants to consider adding a stop closer to the Herring Center,” said Kathy Vass, Greenlink Manager of Development and Marketing. “We worked successfully with Furman University officials who have installed a bus stop along Timmons Drive near the center.”
Nancy Kennedy, Director of Furman’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute added, “This new Greenlink stop will make the Herring Center more accessible to more people in the Greenville area, allowing more area seniors to enjoy the benefits of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. We are pleased Greenlink and the Furman administration worked together to make this possible.”
Formerly housed behind McAlister Auditorium, OLLI offices and classrooms were moved to the Herring Center near Timmons Arena upon its completion. “The bus stop outside Furman’s front gate was a short walk to OLLI’s previous location, but the walk to the Herring Center has been difficult for some OLLI students,” Vass said. “We’re hopeful the new stop will be beneficial to the OLLI program, as well as other activities on the Furman campus.”
Greenlink Rt. 3 provides service along Poinsett Highway and Rutherford Road and is the bus system’s northernmost route. Points of interest include Heritage Green, Cherrydale Shopping Center and Furman University. Average ridership is more than 98,650 annually. Hours of service are 5:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Greenlink operates 11 fixed bus routes Monday through Saturday throughout Greenville County. The system also operates the Clemson Commuter, Clemson Connector, CU-ICAR/St. Francis Shuttle, the downtown trolleys and Greenville Area Paratransit (GAP), an ADA service for those unable to use Greenlink’s fixed route buses.
