Fall for Greenville 2002 Was a Great Success

The streets of downtown Greenville were alive once again as Fall for Greenville 2002 celebrated its 21st year of highlighting the best local restaurants and live music from October 11-13, 2002. The three-day festival showcased the finest local eateries, tapped the best from an abundance of terrific local music talent, and kept the fall air charged with music and an eclectic mix of herbs, spices, and aromatic dishes that seemed to please almost anyone who attended the weekend festival.

The Budweiser Clydesdales got the festivities started with a big kick at 5 PM on Friday. These spectacular horse teams are a very popular attraction wherever they go. First used by Anheuser-Busch to celebrate the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, the distinctive horses have been associated with the company ever since. Anheuser-Busch has very specific guidelines for the massive, yet docile, horses that are on their teams. In order for a horse to qualify for the Anheuser-Busch team, he must be a gelding at least four years old. He must be six feet tall (at the shoulders), and be bay-colored. These horses must also weigh between 1,800-2,000 pounds, have four white stocking feet, a blaze of white on the face, and a black mane and tail. This year's Fall for Greenville audience really seemed to enjoy these magnificent horses.

Once the music started, it was non-stop as five big music stages keep the party going each day of the festival (see schedule below). Music styles ranged from rock to jazz to country.

There was plenty of fun scheduled for the younger crowd in the TeleTech Children's Area, located in the back of Piazza Bergamo. Amusement rides, interactive games, face painting, and live performances were all part of the fun. Various performers hula-hooped, juggled, danced, and performed magic to entertain the kids throughout the weekend.

As Fall for Greenville celebrates "A Taste of Our Town," several just-for-bragging-rights, food-related competitions were planned, including the BellSouth Chili Cook-Off, US Foodservice Ice Carving Competition, Sprint PCS Jalapeno Pepper Eating Contest, Restaurant Team Tug Challenge, Wild Turkey Bartender's Mix-Off, and the CCB Waiter's Race. The IFH Culinary Stage featured several local and nationally known chefs throughout the festival, including Tory McPhail, Executive Chef of Commander's Palace in New Orleans and John Malik, Chef and Proprietor of Culinary Capers.

For beer lovers, the Sprint PCS Specialty Beer Garden featured over 40 different beers from some of the most popular local microbreweries as well as large distributors. The Beer Garden was located on West Washington Street.
