School Boards Association Calls Greenville Group Public Ed Champions

A Greenville organization supporting public schools in Lancaster and Greenville counties has been honored by the South Carolina School Boards Association.

Graduate Greenville, nominated by the Greenville County School Board, is designed to encourage students to succeed in school. It’s a joint effort by the local school system, United Way of Greenville County and The Alliance for Quality Education.

In the summer of 2007, Graduate Greenville initiated five programs to increase high school achievement:

  • Summer camp for rising ninth graders at Berea and Greenville High schools, which focused on pre-algebra, writing and literature, trips to local colleges and interview skills training.
  • An early warning system for incoming ninth-graders that identified potential dropouts and offered summer enrichment, teacher training, community mentors, alternative diploma programs and community involvement.
  • Volunteer visits to the homes of 84 students who failed to show up for the first week of school. As a result, 14 students either re-enrolled immediately or committed to enroll later.
  • Hiring of graduation coaches at two high schools to assist 30 to 40 struggling students and their families.
  • Installation of a phone line and a direct connection to the Mental Health Association’s Crisis Line and Teen Line centers.
