Thursday night’s game summary:

The Greenville Drive (24-16) continued their early control of the Battle of the Palmetto State on Thursday night, as they handily defeated the Charleston RiverDogs (21-19) 8-0 in the series opener at Fluor Field.

For the second consecutive start, Denny Bautista (2-0) befuddled Charleston hitters, scattering five hits over six scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts. In both of Bautista’s starts with the Drive, he’s thrown six shutout frames against the RiverDogs without issuing a walk.

The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Derek Miller was hit by a pitch and later scored on a double play, and a three-run third inning allowed them to pull away.

Joseph Monge led off the frame by cracking a solo homer to straightaway center, his first of the season, to make the score 2-0. After Luis Cedeno (3-3) issued a pair of walks later in the inning, Jordan Procyshen made him pay by lining a two-run double to the right-center gap.

The score remained 4-0 until the eighth, when the Drive struck for four runs against Charleston reliever Manolo Reyes. Javier Guerra’s three-run triple to the right field corner was the big blow in the inning, and Monge’s sacrifice fly brought home another run.

Williams Jerez earned his second save of the year by preserving the shutout and striking out three over three innings.

Procyshen and Francisco Tellez each collected two hits for Greenville on the night. Connor Spencer had a pair of hits for Charleston and reached base three times.

Game two of the series at Fluor Field begins at 7:05 PM on Friday night. RH Michael Kopech (1-2, 3.04) takes the mound for the Drive, and the RiverDogs starter is RH Joey Maher (1-2, 4.18).
