The Clemson Tigers accepted an invitation to play New Year's Day in the 56th Anuual Toyota Gator Bowl. The Tigers will face either Virgina Tech or Notre Dame according to Gator Bowl Chaiman, Leerie Jenkins.
Clemson will, initially, receive 12,500 tickets for the game. The Gator Bowl stadium seats over 76,000. Historically, 20,000 tickets are needed to satisfy ticket requests by the Clemson faithful.
The Clemson Tigers, ranked 15th in the nation, have been taking advantage of their week off by preparing for their big game next Saturday, November 18, 2000, against the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. Clemson head coach, Tommy Bowden, feels that they had two good weeks of practice and they are ready to play the Gamecocks.
Bowden also welcomed the week off due to the extra time afforded to the injured players to recover from their sprains and bruises. Tiger quarterback, Woodrow Dantzler, is recovering from a bruised foot and the extra time has been important to his recovery.
The Tigers (8-2) are in the midst of a two game losing streak. The first loss was a 31-28 last second loss to Georgia Tech on October 28, 2000. Last week, Florida State University overwhelmed Clemson 54-7. The Tigers hope to rebound from these two loses with a big victory over their intrastate rival, the University of South Carolina.
On a positive note, four Clemson Tigers have been nominated for national awards. Keith Adams, Clemson's All American linebacker, is one of three finalists nominated for the Dick Butkus Award. The Dick Butkus Award is presented to the nations top linebacker. The Butkus Award will be presented on December 8, in Orlando, Florida.
Robert Carswell is listed among the 12 finalists for the Thorpe Award. The Thorpe Award is presented to the top defensive back in the nation.
