City Announces Kenneth Miller As New Police Chief

City Manager John Castile announced that the City has hired Kenneth C. Miller as the new police chief. Chief Miller will replace former chief Terri Wilfong, who retired in April from the Greenville Police Department.

Chief Miller became police chief of the Greensboro Police Department in 2010 after 21 years of service with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. As police chief of Greensboro, Miller oversees a $66 million budget and a staff of 783, which includes 673 sworn officers.

According to City Manager John Castile, Chief Miller brings 33 years of experience in military and municipal policing and has successfully implemented neighborhood policing in Greensboro, worked through strategic plans for resource allocation, improved neighborhood quality of life and developed support and information systems to enhance service quality. “Chief Miller has proven experience, leadership and problem-solving skills that will help build on the solid foundation we currently have at the Greenville Police Department.”

Chief Miller underwent an extensive two-day interview process along with six finalists. The assessment process included five panels on various areas of leadership, policing and decision making. The process also included Greenville Police Department personnel, whose input was integral to the decision-making process. The finalists were asked to address their discipline policies, community connections and plans for succession and resource allocation.

Chief Miller began his career as a police officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in 1989. He was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 1995, captain in 1999, major in 2005 and deputy chief in 2006. Chief Miller has had various assignments throughout his career, including patrol, planning and research, information systems and internal affairs.

Chief Miller has a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and political science from East Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Miller is also a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Chief Miller is expected to start on September 12.
