Smoke Alarms

The Greenville City Fire Department provides smoke alarms and installation, free of charge, to city residents. If you feel your smoke alarm is not functioning properly, you cannot afford an alarm or do not have an alarm, call 864-467-4450 to schedule an appointment.

Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and the batteries changed annually. If your alarm is sounding continuously, call 911.

As part of its Community Risk Reduction project, the Greenville City Fire Department has a new smoke alarm initiative. Now, when the Fire Department responds to certain calls at private residences, when applicable, fire personnel will check to see if the home has smoke alarms, and if so, whether they are in good working order. If there are no working smoke alarms, fire personnel will install at least one working smoke alarm.

Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and the batteries changed annually. If your alarm is sounding continuously, call 911.

Community Relations

The Greenville City Fire Department’s motto is “Our City, Our People, Our Responsibility,” and we strive to provide the highest level of service to our community. Our goal is to have a presence at every neighborhood meeting to share information about Fire Department programs and services, and to answer residents’ questions regarding fire safety. If your neighborhood association is having a meeting and you would like for someone from the Fire Department to attend, call 864-467-4445.

Juvenile Fire Starters Program

Most children are fascinated with fire, and while this is a normal curiosity, it can lead to unsafe behaviors. All it takes is one match to spell disaster. Children under six years of age are most likely to accidentally start fires that can kill them or their family members. Children who play with matches or lighters are frequently injured, sometimes severely, resulting in life-long scars and physical limitations. Warning signs of children who are starting fires include burned toys or other objects, burned matches and missing lighters. Don’t assume your child will outgrow this phase. Intervene early to curb this behavior, or it may be too late. Injuries or death can result from one fire. Don’t let the next fatality be one of your loved ones. The Greenville City Fire Department has a team of specialists that can help intervene with juvenile fire starters. If you suspect that your child is playing with fire, please call 864-467-4450.
