Among other factors, April sales results were posively affected by new products all launched this spring (BMW M3, BMW X6, BMW 1 Series, MINI Clubman).

Both the new X5 and the Z4 models are manufactured exclusively at the Spartanburg County BMW plant for worldwide distribution.

BMW Sports Activity Vehicles Sales:
X5 sales were up 24.3 percent this month to 3,373, from 2,713 in the same month last year. Year-to-date, sales are down 3.3 percent, to 11,395 sold through April of this year from 11,783 sold through the same month of last year. The new X6 sold 655 vehicles this month. Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles (X3, X5, and X6 models) were up 15.6 percent for the month, to 5,805 vehicles compared to the 5,020 reported in April 2007. Year-to-date, BMW SAV sales are down 13.2 percent to 18,017 vehicles from 20,764 in 2007.

Z4 Roadster Sales:
Z4 sales were up 12.1 percent to 1,021 in April 2008 from 911 in the same month last year. Year-to-date Z4 sales total 2,680 through April 2008, down 4,9 percent from 2,817 through the same month last year.

MINI Brand, MINI Automobiles Sales:
MINI USA reported a 39.4 percent increase in April sales, to 4,713 cars compared to 3,382 cars sold in the same period a year ago. MINI USA also reported sales of 14,877 for the first four months of 2008, an increase of 29.9 percent over the 11,455 sold in the same period a year ago.

BMW Brand Sales:
BMW brand sales were up 5.6 percent, to 26,735 vehicles compared to 25,310 vehicles sold in April 2007. Year-to-date, BMW reported sales of 85,100 vehicles compared to the 92,670 reported in the same period a year ago, a decline of 8.2 percent.

Automobile Sales:
Monthly sales of BMW brand automobiles increased 3.2 percent in April, to 20,930 versus 20,290 in 2007. Year-to-date, BMW automobile sales are down 6.7 percent to 67,083 versus 71,906 reported in the same period last year.

The Spartanburg County BMW plant, where the X5 SUV and Z4 roadster are manufactured exclusively for worldwide distribution, began recycling methane gas as an energy source at the Upstate BMW plant. The recycled methane gas, drawn from the Palmetto Landfill near greenville, supplies BMW with 25 percent of its energy needs. " Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christine Todd Whitman said, "This is a win-win for everyone. It avoids the need to burn methane. It yields significant amounts of clean energy. And, by avoiding 55,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, it results in cleaner, healthier air for everyone to breathe." Currently, employment at the greenville County plant totals approximately 4,600.
