Benteler Automotive announced that it has chosen Spartanburg as the location for a major automotive manufacturing and assembly facility. The company plans to construct and lease a 190,000 square-foot facility where it will employ 115 people. Projected completion of the new plant is late 2005.
Benteler Automotive, a division of Benteler AG based in Auburn Hills, Michigan, is the largest family-owned independent supplier of automotive products in the world. Its new Spartanburg facility will be located in the Hillside II Industrial Park, located near the intersection of Hwy 290 and Interstate 85-N. In South Carolina, Benteler will manufacture automotive products related to chassis for BMW.
“We are very pleased with this new opportunity to grow our relationship with BMW, “stated Robert DePierre, president of Benteler Automotive North America. “This new plant in South Carolina will add to our capacity and ability to serve our automotive customers in the region. The support we received from Spartanburg County and the state has really been outstanding,” DePierre added.
“We’ve said from day one that targeting and growing our state’s automotive cluster is one of this administration’s top economic development priorities,” said Governor Mark Sanford. “We’ve seen major strides on that front over the past two years, and this announcement is another big step forward. Ultimately, we want to accelerate the pace of that growth – and growth in all segments our state’s economy – by coupling reforms like income tax relief with the competitive workforce and unique quality of life we already have here in South Carolina. At the end of the day, getting more competitive on the tax front is key to getting more companies like Benteler to make the decision.”
“We are extremely pleased to have Benteler Automotive become Spartanburg County’s newest corporate citizen. Their investment decision is another example of how committed the county leadership team of Jeff Horton, David Britt, and Carter Smith are to working with the state to recruit premier companies from around the world,” said Commerce Secretary Bob Faith. “Congratulations!”
“Given the highly competitive nature of this project, the Spartanburg County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) is pleased to have been directly involved in joining forces with state, federal, and regional allies in securing 115 jobs in Spartanburg County through the location of Benteler Automotive in Duncan, South Carolina,” said James C. Rogers, PE, Chairman of the SCEDC.
