Greenville County Schools is the recipient of about 1,500 books as part of Read Greenville’s efforts to get thousands of books in the hands of underserved families.
Schools and community agencies received about 30,000 free books today as part of Bon Secours St. Francis’ Book Grab event. The books were donated by Bon Secours Health System in partnership with Greenville First Steps and Christ Church.
School Board Member Derek Lewis, who is also the Executive Director for Greenville First Steps, is excited about getting books into the hands of families. “We know that the missing link for these families is access to books. They have two or three books in the household, so our goal is to get that number up to about 15 books,” he explained.
The books were donated by Bon Secours Health System in partnership with Greenville First Steps and Christ Church. “We are very excited to support the vision of Read Greenville with this collaborative, community-wide effort to serve others,” said Lori Center, Director of Community Ministry and Senior Services for Bon Secours Health System. “This ‘book grab’ event helps to build a healthier community through literacy. Reducing barriers such as access to books helps educators and parents achieve the goal of reading proficiency by the third grade.”
